Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a disease which only affects men. Cancer begins to grow in the prostate – a gland in the male reproductive system.

Nobody is really sure of what the specific causes are. There are so many possible factors, including age, race, lifestyle, medications, Enzyme PRSS3 linked to aggressive prostate cancer, genetics, sexually transmitted diseases, diet, obesity.

If you’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer, your doctor may recommend surgery.

Common surgery approaches are open surgery and minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy), which includes da Vinci Surgery.

Using the da Vinci Surgical System, surgeons operate through a few small incisions. The da Vinci System has a 3D HD vision system that gives doctors a magnified view inside the body. It also has tiny instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human hand. These features enable surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control.

da Vinci Prostatectomy offers the following potential benefits compared to open surgery:

  • Lower positive surgical margin rates;
  • Faster return of erectile (sexual) function;
  • Better chance for return of urinary continence within 6 months;
  • Less blood loss or need for a transfusion;
  • Fewer complications;
  • Lower risk of wound infection;
  • Shorter hospital stay;
  • Less chance of hospital readmission;
  • Fewer days with catheter;
  • Less risk of deep vein thrombosis.

da Vinci Prostatectomy also offers potential benefits compared to traditional laparoscopy:

  • More patients return to pre-surgery erectile function at 12-month checkup;
  • Faster return of urinary continence;
  • Fewer complications;
  • Better nerve sparing rate;
  • Shorter hospital stay.
