Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate, the gland that transports sperm during ejaculation. An enlarged prostate can affect urinary function, causing frequent toilet travel and sleep disturbances.

Prostate enlargement occurs naturally with aging. Although its causes are unknown, it is one of the most common diseases among men. BPH affects 5 out of 10 men aged 51 to 60 and 9 out of 10 men over 80 years old.

An enlarged prostate exerts pressure on the urethra (the canal that carries urine from the bladder), which can cause many problems. Symptoms may include:

  • Frequent urination during the day and / or night;
  • Sudden need to urinate;
  • Painful urination with burning sensation;
  • Reduced urine flow;
  • The sensation that the bladder did not empty after urination;
  • Unable to urinate;
  • Difficulty in controlling urine flow.

Taking into account the characteristics of your illness, you can establish a therapeutic plan with your doctor. It is important to understand all available options and share all concerns with the specialist.

If you are advised to use minimally invasive therapy, our solution is GreenLight ™ Laser Therapy. As a minimally invasive type of intervention, laser therapy eliminates the  excess of glandular tissue with high energy lasers.

Its unique properties allow the GreenLight device to remove prostate tissue quickly and effectively. In many situations, GreenLight ™ Laser Therapy reduces hospitalization, bleeding, and catheterization time. Recovery is also much faster than traditional surgery.

During the procedure, the specialist uses a laser to quickly heat and vaporize excess prostate tissue, creating a wider channel to allow urine to pass. Usually, patients can leave the hospital a few hours after surgery. If a urinary catheter is inserted at the end of the procedure, it will normally be removed after 24 hours.
